Overall Experience
The Grand Daddy hotel is truly a unique experience. With a plush and almost opulent interior through the hotel building (which incdentally houses Cape Town's oldest working elevator) it has a certain class about it. However it is the roof top Airstream Trailer Park that makes this hotel truly special.
We were lucky enough to be able to stay in one of the trailers, Dorothy, infact, which has a Wizard of Oz inspired polka dot theme, designed by Sarah Pratt, a fine artist and a lecturer at Michaelis.
The trailer was actually really peaceful inside, with modern fittings, including modern plumbing and connection to the mains electricity, and ofcourse an encredably comfortable bed.
The atmosphere on the roof is very relaxing, with a residents only bar where one can catch some rays in the heat of the Cape summer.
Obviously the decor through the main hotel is modern, crip and refreshing, it is however the interiors of the trailers that this Hotel truly deserves awards for. With the novel idea of having each trailer designed by up and coming, and established, interior designers, each has a unique vibe to it. Of course the hotel is excellent value for money by international standards, but considdering the uniqueness and location (on Cape Town busiest tourist street, Long Street) the prices are good even for local visitors. Considdering the friendly service (including prompt and delicious room service from The Showroom Café, the inhouse restaurant)
and uniqueness of this hotel, we were quite surprised to learn that it only has a four star rating.
Overall the Grandaddy was one of the more interesting and pleasant hotels to have stayed in, and with it's central location it has to be on the list of any one looking to stay in Cape Town.
