Crowning the rocky outcrop of Vista Rock near the middle of Central Park, Belvedere Castle was never meant to be a real fortress. Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould designed it in 1867 as a folly, a decorative lookout built purely to reward the walk up from the Mall with a view; the name is Italian for beautiful view.
