Less a museum in the usual sense than a giant playground built from salvage, City Museum occupies a former shoe factory and warehouse in downtown St. Louis and invites visitors to climb, crawl and slide through its interior and grounds. It was created by the sculptor Bob Cassilly, who bought the largely vacant ten-storey building in 1993 and, with a crew of artisans, opened the museum in October 1997.
