Designed by John Eberson in his trademark atmospheric style, the Uptown Theater opened on 6 January 1928 as the first notable cinema in Kansas City outside the downtown area. Universal Pictures acquired the partly built shell at 3700 Broadway in 1927 and hired Eberson to complete it, and he created an auditorium evoking a Mediterranean courtyard, with classical arches and columns, seaside views on the side walls and a ceiling of twinkling stars, drifting clouds and, for a time, mechanical birds....
