Denmark's first railway ran through here before almost anywhere else. Valby station, where Toftegards Alle crosses the tracks in the centre of the district, traces its ancestry to 26 June 1847, when the Copenhagen-Roskilde line - the kingdom's first railway - opened with an intermediate stop slightly east of the present site, built mainly for leisure trips toward Frederiksberg.
