Dedicated to the life and legacy of the founding father of the United Arab Emirates, the Zayed National Museum is the national museum of the country, under construction in the Saadiyat Cultural District of Abu Dhabi alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the planned Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Designed by the British architect Norman Foster, the building is among the most striking in the cultural district, defined by five soaring steel towers shaped like the wingtip feathers of a falcon in flight, a tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's love of falconry and a reference to the bird's deep significance in Emirati culture. The towers function as thermal chimneys, drawing hot air upward and out to passively cool the galleries below in an environmentally responsive design rooted in traditional regional building techniques. The museum is conceived as both a memorial to Sheikh Zayed and a comprehensive presentation of the history, culture and natural heritage of the United Arab Emirates and the wider region. Its galleries trace the deep history of human settlement in the area, the development of trade, faith and Bedouin life, the unification of the emirates in 1971 under Sheikh Zayed's leadership, and the transformation of the nation in the decades since. The collection spans archaeological artefacts, historical objects, manuscripts and interactive exhibits, set within landscaped grounds that form a garden integrated with the cultural district. The institution is intended to serve as a centre for national identity and education, telling the story of how a federation of small Gulf states grew into a modern nation. On opening, it will join the Saadiyat cultural cluster, accessible via combined tickets and forming part of one of the most ambitious concentrations of museums anywhere in the world, drawing visitors interested in the heritage and founding story of the country throughout the year across every season.
