Strung high above the harbour between the waterfront and the slopes of Montjuic, the Transbordador Aeri del Port is a historic aerial cable car that has carried passengers across the port of Barcelona since 1931, built as part of the preparations for the 1929 International Exposition. The line runs roughly 1,300 metres between the Sant Sebastia tower at the Barceloneta beach end and the Miramar station on the Montjuic hillside, passing through the Jaume I tower in the middle of the port, which at around 107 metres was one of the tallest towers of its kind when built. The cabins travel high above the water, offering sweeping aerial views over the harbour, the marina, the city, the Sagrada Familia and the Mediterranean, a perspective unavailable from any other vantage point in the city. The journey takes around ten minutes one way, and the slow glide across the port gives passengers ample time to take in the panorama. Dating from the early twentieth century, the cable car is as much a piece of living heritage as a means of transport, its riveted steel towers and vintage character contrasting with the modern city below. At the Montjuic end, the Miramar station connects to the hill's gardens, viewpoints and the separate Montjuic funicular and cable car that continue up to the castle at the summit, allowing visitors to combine the harbour crossing with an exploration of the hill's parks, museums and the fortress. At the Barceloneta end, it sits beside the beach and the maritime quarter. The cable car operates throughout the year, subject to weather, and the combination of its historic character and its unrivalled views makes it a popular attraction in its own right rather than merely a link between two points across the seasons of the calendar. Tickets are sold for one-way or return journeys, and the cable car is often combined with a day exploring the gardens, museums and castle of Montjuic on one side and the beaches of Barceloneta on the other throughout the year across every season of the calendar.
