The Church House is a rock-themed pub and live-music venue on St James Street in Sheffield city centre, tucked away behind the main road near the cathedral. Set in a Grade II listed building, it has become known as one of the city's premier small rock venues, hosting live bands and open-mic nights through the week. The building was originally constructed in 1860 by the Church of England Educational Institute, a body formed in 1839 to promote the education of young adults. Over the following century the site served various purposes before being converted into a pub around the early 1990s, when it traded as the Ferret and Trouser Leg, a name still visible in a glass panel above the door. After spells as the Priory and the Sanctuary, the pub was bought by Star Pubs in 2012 and given its current name along with a comprehensive refurbishment costing some 220,000 pounds. The work restored original features, exposed the brickwork and added quirky touches such as history boards and beer-bottle chandeliers, with the reopening conducted by the then Mayor of Sheffield. Music is central to its identity, with an open-mic night on Wednesdays and live music every Friday and Saturday, leaning towards rock, blues, folk and alternative covers. Four real ales are usually on at weekends, including regular pours from local breweries, alongside lagers, ciders, cocktails and an interesting food menu. Beyond the gigs, the pub offers a beer garden, pool and snooker, and a recording studio available for hire upstairs, while a weekly board-games club adds a quieter midweek fixture. Its mix of facilities has helped it draw a varied crowd from the surrounding city centre. Just a short walk from the Cathedral tram stop and well served by buses, the Church House combines a heritage building with a firmly contemporary rock-pub character. That blend of history, real ale and grassroots live music has made it a distinctive fixture of Sheffield's city-centre scene.
