Painted a distinctive scarlet and tucked inside Edinburgh College of Art's Lauriston campus, the Wee Red Bar has been a cult live-music and club venue since 1982. The venue was opened by graphic design and photography students and occupies a small room in the Link Corridor that bridges the college's Old Building and the Hunter Building, reached through a concealed entrance on Lady Lawson Street. Despite its modest size, it has earned a citywide following for the quality of its sound and the breadth of its bookings, hosting live music that ranges from reggae to post-rock and just about every genre in between. It has a long record of giving bands some of their earliest gigs, with acts such as Frightened Rabbit, Young Fathers and Django Django among those who played the room on the way up. Club nights are as much a part of its identity as live music, led by the long-running night The Egg, which has been going for more than two decades, alongside queer parties such as the glittery Hey QT. During the Edinburgh festival season the bar becomes a flexible space for live performances and art, and its famously low drink prices have long made it a favourite with students and gig-goers alike. Now operated as part of the Edinburgh University Students' Association, the Wee Red Bar remains a much-loved institution, an intimate, slightly hidden room that has outlasted many larger venues in the city. Edinburgh's small-venue scene is crucial to the development of new Scottish music, and the Wee Red Bar has played an outsized role for its size, offering bands an early platform and audiences cheap, atmospheric gigs in the heart of the city. Its position within the art college, and its later absorption into the Edinburgh University Students' Association, have given it a steady stream of student crowds and a degree of stability that many independent venues lack, while its long-running club nights and Fringe programming keep it busy year-round rather than only in term time.
