Occupying the former Boulevard Theatre on Walker's Court in the heart of Soho, Underbelly Boulevard is a live entertainment venue dedicated to cabaret, variety, comedy and music. The site has a long entertainment history. It began in the late 1950s as a sister venue to the Raymond Revuebar, became a small theatre known as the Elle et Lui, and from the 1970s operated as the Boulevard Theatre, hosting productions including early work by The Comic Strip before closing in the early 1990s. As part of a wider regeneration of Walker's Court led by Soho Estates, the theatre was rebuilt and reopened in October 2019, only to be interrupted by the pandemic shortly after. In 2023 Soho Estates leased the building to Underbelly, the company behind the Olivier Award-winning revival of Cabaret and a major presence at the Edinburgh Fringe, who took it on as their first permanent venue. Underbelly Boulevard opened on 17 October 2023 with a 200-capacity performance space at its core, designed for the kind of cabaret, circus and variety the company is known for programming. Alongside the main room the venue holds a cocktail bar and a 100-cover restaurant, originally run by the team behind the Mayfair restaurant Kitty Fisher's, plus a rehearsal room and daytime hire spaces for readings and workshops. The opening season was built around Bernie Dieter's Club Kabarett, with the venue going on to host late-evening residencies and daytime programming spanning live music, comedy and touring cabaret companies. Set among the bars and theatres of central Soho, it gives the district a year-round home for the variety and cabaret traditions long associated with the area. The intimate scale of the main room, holding only a couple of hundred, keeps performers and audiences close together, suiting the cabaret and variety acts the venue specialises in. Its arrival gave Soho a year-round, purpose-run home for the kind of late-night entertainment long associated with the district, complementing the bars, theatres and restaurants on its doorstep and adding a permanent base for a company previously known mainly for its festival work.
