A bar and live music venue inspired by punk and disco, Zerox sits on Sandhill on Newcastle's historic Quayside, close to the Swing Bridge and the river. The venue grew out of 25 years of running events, gigs and club nights in the city, and was set up to channel a love of music subculture, cult films, left-field fashion and pop art that its founders felt was missing from the centre. Zerox relocated to its larger Quayside home after the 2020 lockdown, taking over a two-floor building, with the main bar on the ground floor and a performance area known as the Shooting Gallery upstairs. It opens late into the night seven nights a week, with regular live music, resident DJs and guest sets running across genres from punk and disco to jazz and house. The bar pours a range of lagers, craft beers and an extensive list of cocktails and spirits, with a happy hour in the early evening. Food is served by Zerox Cantina, offering tacos, tortas and tequila in the early part of the evening, and the venue can host parties and private functions. A seating area to the front catches the sun in fine weather, and disabled access to the main bar is good, though the upstairs space is reached by stairs. With its alternative ethos and inclusive, community-minded approach, Zerox has carved out a distinctive niche among the bars lining the Newcastle Quayside. The Newcastle Quayside, lined with restored warehouses and historic buildings beside the Tyne, has long been a focus of the city's bars and nightlife, and Zerox brings a deliberately alternative flavour to the strip. Its identity blends punk and disco with cult film, zine culture and pop art, aiming for an inclusive, close-knit atmosphere rather than a mainstream club feel, and opening late every night with live music and DJs has established it as a distinctive destination for those after something off the beaten track on the riverside.
