Aztlan Parque Urbano is an amusement park in the great Chapultepec park of Mexico City, opened in 2022 on the site of the former Feria de Chapultepec, a long-running fairground that had closed after a fatal accident on one of its rides. Conceived as a modern, family-oriented urban park, Aztlan was developed as part of a wider renewal of the Chapultepec area and blends amusement rides with green space, cultural references and dining, taking its name and theme from Aztlan, the legendary ancestral homeland of the Mexica peoples. Its centrepiece is a large observation wheel, among the tallest in Latin America, which rises above the trees and offers sweeping views over the park and the sprawling city beyond. Alongside it, the park offers a range of rides and attractions for various ages, themed areas drawing on Mexican mythology and nature, restaurants and event spaces, all set within the leafy surroundings of one of the largest city parks in the western hemisphere. Reached easily from the surrounding districts and combined with the many other attractions of Chapultepec, including its castle, lake and museums, Aztlan provides a contemporary leisure destination that has revived a much-missed tradition of fairground fun in the heart of the capital. The earlier Feria de Chapultepec had been a beloved if ageing fairground for decades, but it was shut down after a roller-coaster accident in 2019 claimed lives, and the city resolved to replace it with a safer, modern and more environmentally conscious park, reopened under the name Aztlan. The new development was designed to integrate more harmoniously with its surroundings in the vast Chapultepec park, with greenery, water features and architecture drawing on Mexican cultural and mythological themes alongside the rides. The towering observation wheel that dominates the park has become its signature, lifting riders high above the treetops for panoramic views over the green expanse of Chapultepec and the immense city stretching to the mountains beyond. The park offers a variety of attractions for different ages, from family rides to more thrilling ones, together with restaurants, cultural and event spaces and themed zones inspired by the legendary homeland of the Mexica from which the park takes its name. Set within one of the largest urban parks in the western hemisphere, close to the castle, lake, zoo and great museums of Chapultepec, and easily reached from across the city, Aztlan has restored a much-missed tradition of fairground enjoyment to the heart of the Mexican capital.
