Built around three Olympic-standard pools, the Hamdan Sports Complex is one of the largest multi-purpose sports arenas in the world, set on Emirates Road on the southern edge of Dubai. Completed in 2010 for Dubai Municipality, the complex spreads across some 24 hectares, its blue-toned architecture and landscaping making it a distinctive sight beside the highway. Its aquatic facilities are the centrepiece, with two fifty-metre swimming pools and a separate diving tank built to international standards. Movable floors allow the swimming pools to be reconfigured into shorter pools at varying depths at the touch of a button, while the diving tank carries platforms up to ten metres. The competition arena seats around 15,000 spectators in a three-tier, horseshoe-shaped bowl overlooking the main pool and diving tank. Using advanced covering technology, the pools can be decked over to create a dry floor for other uses, letting the venue host basketball, handball, volleyball and martial-arts championships. Beyond sport, the converted arena has staged concerts, conventions and exhibitions, supported by VIP lounges, executive boxes, media facilities and parking for more than 1,600 cars. It has hosted international aquatics championships and major multi-sport events, cementing its role as a flagship sports venue for the city. Beyond hosting elite competition, the complex doubles as a public and training facility, with its pools and halls used by clubs, schools and community programmes when major events are not in residence. Its flexible design, able to switch between aquatic and dry-court configurations, has allowed it to stage a wide span of events under one roof over the years. The scale of the building, its spectator capacity and its extensive support facilities place it among the more capable indoor venues in the region for both sport and large gatherings. Set beside Emirates Road on the southern fringe of the city, it is easily reached by car from across the emirates, with its vast car parks sized for championship crowds.
