An open green beside Hampton Court Palace, Hampton Court Green is a large area of common land at East Molesey, on the Surrey bank of the River Thames south-west of London. The green sits directly outside the gates of the Tudor palace, forming part of the historic landscape that surrounds the royal site. For much of the year it is a quiet public space, used by walkers, families and visitors heading to the palace and the riverside. It is best known, however, as an events ground, hosting open-air concerts and festivals in the warmer months against the backdrop of the palace. The annual Hampton Court Palace Festival stages performances by major artists in a temporary arena set up on and around the green. Its setting, framed by the palace, the river and surrounding parkland, gives outdoor events here a distinctive historic character. The green is close to Hampton Court railway station and the bridge over the Thames, making it straightforward to reach from London. Surrounded by the palace grounds, Bushy Park and the river, it forms part of one of the most historic green landscapes on the city's edge. For the headline summer festival, a temporary covered arena is built on the green, giving an intimate capacity in the low thousands with the floodlit palace as a backdrop to the stage. Outside the festival season, the green reverts to open public land, crossed by walkers and visitors and forming part of the wider conservation area around the palace. Its historic surroundings, taking in the Tudor and baroque ranges of the palace, the formal gardens and the river, lend any event held here a setting that few outdoor venues can match. The green is well served by the nearby railway station and the bridge across the Thames, making it an easy day trip from central London. Together with the palace, the maze and the surrounding parkland, it forms part of one of the most visited historic landscapes on the city's south-western edge.
