Visitors pay to smash old crockery, electronics and furniture with bats and hammers at The Smash Room, a stress-relief venue, or rage room, in the Al Quoz industrial area of Dubai. The concept is simple: a controlled space, protective gear and a pile of breakable objects to destroy however the customer sees fit. The business sits on Umm Suqeim Street among the warehouses of Al Quoz, the district that has become home to much of the city's indoor entertainment. It has operated for several years and has since expanded to further branches in Mirdif and Abu Dhabi. Sessions run for around thirty minutes, with customers kitted out in overalls, gloves and face protection before entering a monitored room stocked with items to break. Solo, couple and group packages are offered, with the rooms sized for about four smashers at a time. The appeal is pitched partly as light-hearted fun and partly as a release valve for stress and frustration, marketed under the language of rage therapy. Birthdays, corporate team-building and one-off celebrations make up a large share of bookings. A recurring theme of the venue is recycling: it presents itself as a recycling-first operation, collecting unwanted electronics and other items and disposing of or upcycling everything that gets smashed. That angle lets customers break things without the guilt of pure waste. Children can take part through a dedicated package designed for younger ages, with the equipment and items scaled accordingly and adult supervision required. Add-ons such as screens for music, video and karaoke feature in some of the party packages. Walk-ins are accepted, but the venue encourages booking ahead to avoid waiting, and footwear that protects the toes is required given the nature of the activity. CCTV monitors each room for safety throughout the session. As one of the first venues of its kind in the UAE, it has built a niche among the city's growing roster of unusual indoor activities, offering a novelty experience that needs no skill and little planning to enjoy.
