Taking up an entire block of the Eixample district, the old Estrella Damm brewery in Barcelona is a former beer factory that now serves as the company's headquarters, a music venue and a place to tour the history of its beer. Locally it is known as the Antiga Fabrica Damm, and historically as La Bohemia. The building was constructed in 1905 and brewed beer until 1992, when production moved elsewhere. It has the classic industrial look of its period, with facades of stucco and exposed brick and a tall conical chimney, and is listed for its heritage value. The brewing company itself traces its origins back more than 140 years, to a recipe developed in the 19th century by its founder, and the old factory remains closely tied to the brand and its story. Today the site is one of the city's busier music venues, hosting concerts through the year and serving for over a decade as a key stage for the BAM festival held during Barcelona's La Merce celebrations, with notable pop and rock acts. It can also be visited on a guided tour, which leads through the old brewing hall with its bronze stills and the scale boiler room, explaining how the beer was originally made, and ending with a tasting of several Damm beers. A permanent exhibition tells the history of the brewery, and an upper floor added in recent years includes a weighing room and a terrace, while free visits are offered on certain days for those who book ahead. The tastings are open only to adults, and tours run in several languages, lasting around an hour and a half from the brewing rooms to the final sampling. Set in the streets near the Sagrada Familia and well served by the metro, the old brewery combines an industrial monument, a working corporate base and a popular events space in a single city block. Booking ahead is essential for both the free Wednesday visits and the paid tasting tours.
