Centred on a soaring fairy-tale castle, the Magic Kingdom was the first of the theme parks to open at Walt Disney World in Florida. It remains the most visited theme park anywhere in the world. The park opened in 1971 as the heart of the new resort, modelled on the original Disneyland in California but built on a far larger scale. Its opening transformed the quiet countryside near Orlando. At its centre stands Cinderella Castle, a tall, slender palace of pale stone and blue spires that serves as the symbol of the whole resort. The castle marks the meeting point of the park's themed lands. Visitors enter down a recreated turn-of-the-century American main street and fan out into lands of adventure, the frontier, fantasy and the future. Each land has its own rides, shows, shops and places to eat. Famous rides include a riverboat journey through jungles, a haunted mansion, a pirate voyage and a gentle boat ride past singing dolls from around the world. Roller coasters thread through several of the lands. Parades make their way along the streets by day, and in the evening fireworks burst above the castle in a show watched by huge crowds. Costumed characters greet visitors throughout the park. A clever system of service tunnels runs beneath the park, allowing staff and deliveries to move out of sight of guests. This helps keep the make-believe world above unbroken. The park lies within the vast Walt Disney World Resort, near the city of Orlando in central Florida. Over the decades the park has been refreshed and expanded, with new rides and lands added and older attractions updated. A major enlargement of one of its fantasy lands added new areas based on popular films. The park is busiest during American holidays and school breaks, when long queues form for the most popular rides. Many visitors plan their day carefully to make the most of their time inside.
