One of the great green spaces of London, Hyde Park spreads over a vast stretch of grass, trees and water in the heart of the city. For centuries it has been a place to walk, ride, gather and protest. The land was once a hunting ground of the kings of England, taken from an abbey at the Reformation. It was later opened to the public and became one of the first royal parks people could freely enjoy. At its centre lies a long curving lake, the Serpentine, where people row boats in summer and a hardy few swim through the year. The lake is one of the best-loved features of the park. At the north-east corner stands Speakers' Corner, a famous spot where anyone may stand up and address the crowd on any subject. It has long been a symbol of free speech. The park has hosted great events over the years, from a famous glass exhibition hall in the 19th century to large open-air concerts in modern times. Crowds gather here on big occasions. A memorial fountain honours Diana, Princess of Wales, its ring of flowing water set into the grass. It has become a gathering place for visitors and families. Broad paths cross the park, used by walkers, runners, cyclists and riders on horseback along the old sand track known as Rotten Row. There is room for all. In the warmer months the lawns fill with people picnicking, playing games or simply lying in the sun. The park is a welcome escape from the busy streets around it. Each winter a large fair is set up in the park, with rides, stalls and lights, drawing crowds through the dark months. It has become a fixture of the festive season. The park joins seamlessly with the neighbouring Kensington Gardens, so that the green space stretches even further west towards a royal palace. Together they form a vast oasis. Surrounded by grand streets and museums, the park offers a great breathing space in the middle of one of the world's largest cities. It is busy yet restful. It lies at the heart of the West End of London, bordered by smart districts on every side.
