I was left unsupervised

A busy shopping street in the smart west of London, Kensington High Street has long been one of the city's favourite places to shop. Its mix of big stores and small shops draws crowds through the day. The street runs through the heart of the Kensington district, a wealthy and historic part of the capital. Grand houses and museums lie all around. For much of the 20th century it was famous for its large department stores, some of which became landmarks in their own right. A few of these grand buildings still stand. Today the street holds a blend of well-known chains, fashion shops and places to eat, serving both local people and visitors. It remains a lively place to browse. In the 1960s and 1970s the area was a centre of fashion, with bold and trend-setting boutiques drawing the young. That spirit lingers in its character. Hidden above some of the shops are roof gardens, a surprising green retreat laid out high over the busy street. They date from the same fashionable era. The street is well served by the underground, with a station that brings shoppers straight to its heart. Buses run along its length as well. Side streets off the main road lead to quiet squares, fine houses and tucked-away cafes. They reward the visitor who strays from the shops. Nearby stand a royal palace and its park, as well as some of the city's greatest museums, all within easy walking distance. The street makes a good base for a visit. In the evenings the street stays busy, with restaurants, bars and a cinema drawing people out after the shops have closed. There is life here at all hours. Its blend of shopping, history and a touch of past glamour gives the street a character all its own. It remains a key part of west London life. It runs through the Kensington district, in the west of central London, close to the royal park.
