A dusty book depot under Islands Brygge Library was reborn in 2016 as Bryggekaelderen, the neighbourhood's atmospheric underground culture venue. Floor-to-ceiling shelves filled with books and hidden nooks line the concrete walls, giving the cellar what its keepers describe as a mix of living room and bunker - an identity all its own beneath the smallest and arguably cosiest library in Copenhagen. The programming is deliberately open-ended: poetry evenings, concerts, children's events, film screenings, exhibitions and experimental performance all pass through, with one-man shows by named Danish writers alongside grassroots nights. Every event is co-created between the library, Kulturhuset Islands Brygge and local citizens - the stated vision is a room the city's residents use and shape themselves, a place for anyone with something on their heart. Entry is through the courtyard at Njalsgade 15, a stone's throw from the harbour front where Islands Brygge's waterfront park and harbour baths draw crowds all summer. Events are announced through the venue's Facebook and Instagram pages and the municipal culture calendar.
