Home to Cardiff City FC since 2009 and a regular stage for the Wales national team, Cardiff City Stadium in the Leckwith district replaced the club's much-loved but ageing Ninian Park, which stood across the road for 99 years. The new ground opened in July 2009 as the centrepiece of a wider redevelopment of the Leckwith area, and an expansion of the Ninian Stand in 2014 lifted capacity to around 33,000, making it the second-largest stadium in Wales after the Principality Stadium. The Bluebirds' tenure has already packed the ground with history: Premier League football in 2013-14 and 2018-19, play-off campaigns, and some of the most emotional nights in Welsh football as the national side qualified here for Euro 2016 - the country's first major tournament in 58 years - before that unforgettable run to the semi-finals in France. Wales played the bulk of their competitive home fixtures at the stadium through the 2010s. The bowl is a conventional four-stand design with the Canton Stand, Grange End, Ninian Stand and Grandstand, hospitality suites along the west side and the club's offices and megastore on site. Concerts and other events fill non-matchday gaps, and the adjacent Cardiff International Sports Stadium serves the athletics community. The ground sits about a mile and a half west of the city centre off Sloper Road, with Ninian Park railway station a short walk away and Grangetown station serving the eastern approaches on matchdays. The stadium opened with an initial capacity around 26,800 before the Ninian Stand expansion took it past 33,000, and the site forms part of a larger Leckwith development that includes the neighbouring athletics stadium and a retail park; housing now stands where Ninian Park's pitch lay across Sloper Road. For supporters the walk from Cardiff Central takes around 25 minutes, and the ground's concourses, hospitality lounges and club megastore make it the day-to-day heart of the club's operations as well as its matchday home.
