Billed by many regulars as Copenhagen's cosiest music room, Christiania Jazz Club occupies the ground floor of the Opera building near Pusher Street in the freetown of Christiania. The club shares its home with the Borneteateret (children's theatre), and the space has the worn, candle-lit, defiantly analogue charm of the freetown itself - reviewers consistently describe an intimate vintage room where musicians and audience practically share the same breath. Jazz is the backbone - live sets midweek and weekends and a famous Sunday jam that pulls players from across the city - but the calendar has grown sideways over the years into hip-hop evenings, songwriter nights, comedy and spoken word, world-music Saturdays and occasional rock and country sessions, plus special one-off concerts. During the Copenhagen Jazz Festival the club becomes one of the festival's most atmospheric small stages. Practicalities are pleasantly old-school: doors generally around 20:00 with music until late, modest cover charge on concert nights, and cash the safest bet at the bar. The acoustics of the low room get repeated praise, and the audience mixes Christiania locals, jazz devotees and travellers who wandered in and stayed. It is a few minutes on foot from Christianshavn metro station.
