Coffee comes in porcelain cups and cake is eaten with a proper pastry fork at Dahlbergs Cafe, the old-fashioned konditori in the heart of the Gamla Linkoping open-air museum. The cafe occupies the 18th-century Tornbergska garden building at Kryddbodtorget, surrounded by cobblestones and red wooden houses, and the whole experience is pitched as a small time-travel: classic Swedish pastries - Budapest slices, Paris waffles, raspberry mazarins, prinsesstarta - alongside daily bread deliveries from local bakeries. Lunch is the simple Swedish kind: shrimp sandwiches on rye-spelt bread, meatball sandwiches with beetroot salad, homemade savoury pies with salad, soup in season and pancakes with jam and cream for the children. The cafe holds a full alcohol licence, and in the warmer months its big garden becomes one of Ostergotland's most idyllic fika spots, with a glassed-in veranda, an ice cream pavilion and the summer lunch annexe Vilhelminas frestelser next door. The programme stretches beyond fika: author talks with the Linkoping book society, sip-and-paint evenings, embroidery nights, summer garden concerts and Tuesday events in the garden, plus private bookings for memorial coffees, christenings and celebrations. The same family team also runs Hilma Winblads bed and breakfast and the Valla hostel nearby, whose guests take breakfast at the cafe. Open year-round, typically 11:00-17:00 with a late evening on Wednesdays.
