Over 500 cultural happenings a year pour out of a colourful two-storey house at Gronland 10 in Oslo. Dattera til Hagen - "the gardener's daughter" - opened in 2002 when Hakon Pettersen and a friend bought the place during a study break, and two decades on it has become the hub of the Gronland quarter: bar, cafe, club and stage rolled into one, with one of the city's most loved backyards. The programme runs seven days a week - concerts, club nights, debates, book launches, improv theatre and stand-up. The Wednesday comedy night Proveroret, run with the Reis Deg comedians' club (founded 1994), has grown into an institution of Norwegian stand-up, making Dattera the east side's most important humour stage. The courtyard is one of the biggest stages on the Oyafestivalen club day and Musikkfest Oslo, and the music profile is broad with weight on electronica, reggae, disco, funk, pop, folk, jazz and soul; weekend DJs play both floors. Food and drink hold up their end: small plates, salads and pizza by day and evening, cold drinks late, with weekend hours running to 03:00. Parts of the house can be hired for meetings, talks, birthdays and office parties. The location, between the mosques, greengrocers and bars of Gronland a few minutes from Oslo Central Station, is very much part of the identity - Dattera has long stood as an argument for the neighbourhood's mixed, creative street life. Hours run daily from late morning - 11:00 most days, noon on Sundays - stretching to 02:00-03:00 towards the weekend. Founder Hakon Pettersen has stayed at the helm since 2002 and remains one of the neighbourhood's most vocal advocates, arguing for more licences and more life on Gronland's streets alongside established neighbours like Oslo Mekaniske Verksted and Olympen. The name - Norwegian for 'the daughter of the garden' - nods to the backyard oasis that remains the venue's summer heart.
