The name is the business model: Taste First. SmagForst at Jaegergardsgade 32, in the heart of Aarhus's liveliest food street, has run its combined wine shop and wine bar since 2009 on the simple conviction that nobody should buy a bottle unheard - and the informal warmth of the place has made it a fixture in every guide to the city's wine scene since. The room works both ways at once: shelves of wine, rum, whisky, gin and port for retail, and tables where the same range is poured by the glass or bottle in resolutely unpretentious surroundings. The house even allows the rarest of wine-bar liberties - book a table and bring your own food, and the staff will match wines to whatever you carry in. Tastings are the second pillar: a rolling public calendar of wine, champagne, rum, gin, whisky and port evenings - beginner-friendly sessions, blind tastings, themed flights around 329-399 kroner - plus private tastings in-house or out, with gift-experience packages covering mixed flights of three to six glasses with snacks. Hours split the identities cleanly: shop from 10:00 Monday to Saturday, wine-bar mode from 15:00 Thursday through Saturday, running to 23:00 Thursday and 01:00 Friday and Saturday, closed Sundays. Jaegergardsgade's restaurant row surrounds the door, the central station is five minutes' walk, and the combination of retail pricing, pour-first honesty and no-airs hosting keeps both locals and visiting wine tourists in rotation. Jaegergardsgade completes the picture: the former working-class street behind the station has become Aarhus's densest strip of restaurants, coffee roasters and specialty shops, and SmagForst's doorway - shelves visible through the glass, tasting tables inside - has anchored the wine end of that transformation since before the street was fashionable.
