Amager's comedy factory started in a warehouse and grew into a two-stage cultural engine. Teater Play at Strandlodsvej 7, in the fast-growing quarter between Amagerbro and Amager Strand, began in 2004 in smaller premises in Njalsgade on Islands Brygge and moved the whole operation to Strandlodsvej in January 2013, where two stages now run in parallel - Stage 1 entered from Strandlodsvej, Stage 2 from Lindgreens Alle - with free parking on both streets and the city centre twenty minutes away by bike. The house doubles as greenhouse and playground for professional performers: its stated purpose is giving actors, writers, directors, comedians and musicians a vibrant open scene to develop and test new ideas, with priority to newly written or newly translated drama. One or two in-house theatre productions land each season around a heavy rotation of stand-up, test shows, impro-comedy and guest performances - Denmark's comedy establishment from Christian Fuhlendorff to Thomas Warberg runs new material here, while an international guest track brings English, Spanish and Polish-language stand-up to the same boards. The third leg is education: Teaterskolen Amager, the school department running since 2002, teaches drama, singing and comedy to children from third grade through adult acting and impro classes, and a course department serves companies and staff groups. The location has aged well - the thousands of new residents around Amager Strand have supplied the theatre with a growing local audience, and its cafe-stage format keeps the room busy year-round. The V.I.P. newsletter - Very Important Play'er, in house humour - gives regulars first crack at new show releases, gift cards cover the a-grin-as-a-present market, and the twin-stage setup lets a test show and a touring headliner run the same evening without treading on each other - small-operator agility that the big comedy rooms in the inner city cannot match.
