A three-storey organ lives on the third floor of the UT music building. Bates Recital Hall, at 2406 Robert Dedman Drive on the University of Texas at Austin campus, is the principal performance room of the Butler School of Music - a roughly 700-seat hall (652 in standard configuration) that hosts everything from full symphony orchestras, concert bands and major choral programs to jazz big bands, chamber ensembles and solo recitals, most of them free or nearly so. The room's crown is the Visser-Rowland tracker organ, one of the largest mechanical-action instruments in the country: three storeys tall, 24 tons, 5,315 pipes across four manuals and 67 stops, built on 18th-century Dutch principles and dominating the stage wall like architecture. The instrument anchors UT's organ program and a recital series that draws players from around the world, while the hall's tuned acoustics - designed for unamplified performance - make it the campus room of choice for recording projects and visiting classical artists booked through Texas Performing Arts. The hall sits inside the Music Building and Recital Hall complex next door to Bass Concert Hall, sharing the Robert Dedman arts corridor with the McCullough Theatre and the drama stages, with twelve wheelchair and companion spaces built into the floor plan. The calendar runs nightly through the academic year - orchestras Saturday, wind symphony Wednesday, choirs Thursday - and local arts organisations rent the room between them: a working conservatory hall where the city hears its next generation of musicians for the price of parking. The organ's presence shapes the hall's wider identity: visiting recitalists build programs around the instrument's Dutch-baroque voicing, organ students get daily access to a machine most conservatories can only bus their classes to visit, and the annual organ series draws audiences that fill the room for repertoire heard nowhere else in Texas. For everything amplification would spoil - choirs, string chamber music, art song - Bates remains Austin's reference room.
