The world's largest honky tonk keeps live bulls behind the dance floor. Billy Bob's Texas at 2520 Rodeo Plaza in the Fort Worth Stockyards opened on 1 April 1981 inside a 100,000-square-foot building whose past lives read like Texas itself: a 1910 open-air cattle barn, enclosed in 1936 as a Centennial project with livestock stalls and an auction ring, an aircraft factory during World War II, then a department store so vast the stock boys wore roller skates. Founder Billy Bob Barnett's conversion gave the state its superlative: 6,000 capacity, more than 30 bar stations, a Texas-size dance floor and real professional bull riding in the old auction ring every Friday and Saturday night. The stage history is country music's attendance ledger - Merle Haggard once bought a round for the entire house, and the wall of stars runs from Willie Nelson, George Strait and Garth Brooks to ZZ Top and B.B. King, who loved the house ribs enough to have them shipped on tour. Miranda Lambert became the first woman to sell out back-to-back nights in 2011, the Academy of Country Music and CMA have named it club of the year a dozen times, and every headliner leaves handprints in concrete on the Wall of Fame beside the 75 autographed guitars of the Guitar Bar. Between shows the building works as a full entertainment complex: line-dance lessons, pool tables, the Honky Tonk Kitchen's barbecue, a gift store, arcade games and private events from 20 guests to the full 6,000, with the 600-capacity 81 Club recently carved out for developing acts. George Strait narrates the welcome video; the Stockyards' twice-daily cattle drive passes outside. Nowhere concentrates more Texas per square foot. The 1988 ownership change - Holt Hickman, Billy Minick and partners rescuing the club from its founder's overreach - stabilised the institution, and the same families' stewardship of the wider Stockyards preserved the district the honky tonk needs around it. The bull riding is genuinely professional, sanctioned competition with real stock; no mechanical bull has ever been allowed in the building, a distinction the house treats as a matter of honour.
