A World War II machine shop kept its lathe and got a brewery. Central Machine Works at 4824 East Cesar Chavez Street in East Austin occupies the Quonset-hut complex of Capital Machine Works, a custom metal fabrication shop that opened in 1940 producing aircraft parts and transport trailers - men and women both on the wartime floor - and spent the following seven decades machining custom industrial components for Texas businesses until the shop finally closed in 2016. Rather than let the 9,821-square-foot hut fall to East Austin's redevelopment wave, the new owners spent three years converting it into a German-style beer hall that opened in November 2019 with the building's history deliberately left in place: an 18,000-pound metal airplane lathe mounted above the bar, an original breaker switch by the kitchen, and machine-shop relics threaded through the room. Gleaming brewing tanks rise along the entrance so the beer is made in full view of the hall, which fills with communal bench seating under the arched steel roof. The operation runs as a full neighbourhood amenity: house-brewed lagers, hazy pale ales and European styles from the in-house brewery, a full bar with cocktails and wine, and a kitchen turning out pizzas, burgers and brats - supplemented by rotating partners like Winston's Kitchen's curry chicken in the garden. The expansive beer garden is the social engine, with a lit outdoor stage hosting live bands under string lights, plus wrestling nights, yoga, trivia, run clubs and an art gallery showcasing local creatives. The brewery's community streak extends to charity work, including a 12,000-dollar donation to Ukraine relief in 2022. Family-friendly, walk-in-welcoming and flanked by the restaurants of the East Cesar Chavez corridor, CMW is the model East Austin adaptive reuse: the neighbourhood keeps its industrial landmark, the landmark keeps making things - the product just pours colder now.
