The CBGB of the South is a British pub in Little Haiti with cheap beer, infamous bathrooms and 45 years of glorious noise. Churchill's Pub at 5501 NE Second Avenue in Miami traces to New Year's Day 1979, when Dave Daniels - a promoter from Leek, England who had booked Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Steppenwolf at British pop festivals before working Miami cruise ships - opened his first small pub near Overtown. By late 1980 he had moved into the Second Avenue building, a working-class day bar dating to the 1940s, renamed it for Sir Winston Churchill, and set about serving English pub food and satellite soccer to expats while the neighbourhood around him became Little Haiti. Music arrived when punk club Flynn's died in 1983 and its orphaned scene asked Daniels for a room. His only rule was no stage diving - there was barely a stage - until Charlie Pickett drew 300 people one night and Daniels built a real one. What followed was the longest open-door experiment in Florida music: punk, hardcore, metal, noise, experimental jazz, international acts and total unknowns, nearly 20,000 shows across 35 years, with Daniels living on the premises and giving performers close to total artistic freedom. Miami New Times documented the era in an oral history when Daniels, then 73, sold the pub in May 2014 to Little Haiti investor Mallory Kauderer and retired, ecstatic. The institution has outlasted its founder's tenure: the pub kept booking through the late 2010s, closed amid a 2021 ownership battle that made front-page business news, and reopened again with its essential character - the weekly jazz night, the punk matinees, the dartboards and Premier League mornings - intact. The building's scuffed walls carry the accumulated flyers and graffiti of four decades of South Florida underground history. Still unpolished by design and beloved for it, Churchill's remains the room where Miami's loudest music lives, a five-minute walk from the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and a world away from South Beach.
