The Rolling Stones opened it in 1995 before the Jaguars had ever kicked off a season there. EverBank Stadium at 1 EverBank Stadium Drive in downtown Jacksonville rose on the site of the old Gator Bowl stadium - a structure dating to 1927 that was almost entirely demolished and rebuilt in nineteen months, keeping only a portion of the 1948 west upper deck, in a 134-million-dollar sprint to be ready for the expansion Jaguars' 1995 debut. The name has churned with the banking industry - Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, Alltel Stadium, EverBank Field, TIAA Bank Field and, since 2023, EverBank Stadium - but the building's calendar has stayed constant. It hosts the Jaguars, the annual Florida-Georgia rivalry game whose fan gathering is famously outsized, the Gator Bowl each winter, and it has staged Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005, when Jacksonville became the smallest city ever to host the game. Football capacity runs to about 67,800, expandable well beyond 82,000 for college football and special events. Signature quirks abound: the twin scoreboards installed in 2014 were the largest video boards in the world at the time, and the north end zone deck features wading pools and cabanas - spectator swimming at an NFL game, a Jacksonville original. Concert history includes the Stones, U2, Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour and country mega-bills. The stadium is now in the middle of its biggest transformation: the "Stadium of the Future" project, a 1.4-billion-dollar renovation agreed between the city and the team in 2024, will wrap the bowl in a heat-mitigating facade and shade canopy, rebuild concourses and cut capacity to a more premium 62,000. The Jaguars are playing through construction phases, with full completion targeted for the 2028 season. The site anchors Jacksonville's sports complex on the St. Johns River, beside the arena, the baseball grounds and Daily's Place amphitheatre, a short drive over the bridges from downtown and the beaches. Tailgating lots open early - for the Florida-Georgia weekend, very early - and rideshare and shuttle services do heavy lifting on big dates.
