Kentucky's most visited attraction is not a racetrack or a distillery - it is a single block of Fourth Street in downtown Louisville. Fourth Street Live, spanning Fourth between Liberty Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard, is the Cordish Companies' 350,000-square-foot dining and entertainment district, opened on 1 June 2004 and drawing over four million visitors a year. The block carries sixty years of urban-renewal archaeology: Fourth Street was Louisville's great shopping promenade before becoming the pedestrianised River City Mall in 1973, then the glass-roofed Louisville Galleria in 1982 - each an attempt to revive downtown, each fading in turn. Cordish's 70-million-dollar remake stripped the failing mall, reopened the street to slow traffic under a soaring canopy, and bet on nightlife over retail. The formula stuck: Hard Rock Cafe anchors a rotating cast of restaurants, sports bars, bowling, live-music rooms and clubs - from bourbon-forward flagships like the Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse to party staples such as Tavern on Fourth and PBR Louisville - with around 150 free concerts and events a year staged under the canopy, where a state entertainment-district licence lets visitors roam the block with drinks in hand. Its downtown position makes it the default pre- and post-game destination: the KFC Yum! Center arena, the Kentucky International Convention Center, Whiskey Row and the Muhammad Ali Center are all within a few blocks, and Derby week turns the block into one continuous party. Later phases added office and coworking space as the district matured. Practical notes: individual venues set their own hours, cover charges and age policies - the block skews 21-plus after dark on weekends, when a dress code and security screening apply at the canopy entrances - and garage parking surrounds the district. For visitors it remains the simplest one-stop answer to a night out in Louisville.
