Jerry Garcia spent years talking about opening a club of his own - he was going to call it Casa Garcia. Thirty years after his death, his family finally built it. Garcia's Chicago, at 1001 West Washington Boulevard in the West Loop, opened on 21 March 2025 as a 300-capacity concert venue and restaurant celebrating the Grateful Dead co-founder's legacy, six years after the project was first announced and then shelved by the pandemic. The venue is a collaboration between the Garcia family and Peter Shapiro's Dayglo Presents - the independent-music operation behind Brooklyn Bowl, the Capitol Theatre and the Dead's Fare Thee Well concerts. Interior design by Tristam Steinberg and Jesse Lauter blends Californian mid-century modern with psychedelic flair, the walls hung with unseen Garcia family photos, vintage posters, records and the cassettes that shaped Jerry's ear. Musically it runs like a modern jazz club with a jam-band heart: Grahame Lesh and Friends opened the room, and the calendar sweeps across jazz, jam, Americana, New Orleans funk and world music - Blind Boys of Alabama, Grace Potter and Preservation Hall Jazz Band featured in the first season, with local promoter Michael Berg of Deep Cut handling booking. The food honours the man as much as the music. In the former Wishbone restaurant space, the menu draws on Garcia's Spanish heritage and Northern California roots - Spanish hams and cheeses, coconut-lime shrimp, Jerry's Roast Beef Sandwich - with themed cocktails and, naturally, milkshakes. On show nights a concert ticket is required for entry; non-show nights run as straight dinner service. The West Loop location puts it among Chicago's densest restaurant blocks, a short walk from the Morgan Green Line stop. For Deadheads it is a pilgrimage; for everyone else, one of the most intimate new listening rooms in the city.
