A Formula 1 track coils around this amphitheatre on three sides, and a canopy of red steel tubes sweeps from above its stage up the 251-foot observation tower next door. The Germania Insurance Amphitheater, at the Circuit of the Americas complex southeast of Austin, is Central Texas's largest outdoor concert venue - a 14,000-capacity bowl carved into the racetrack's Grand Plaza. Built for about 62 million dollars and designed by Austin's Miro Rivera Architects - the steelwork meant to evoke the dynamism of race cars - the venue opened in late 2012 as the Tower Amphitheater, staged its first full season from April 2013 with a Kenny Chesney opener under the Austin360 Amphitheater name, and took its current title in 2020 through a naming deal with the Brenham-based insurer. The layout offers 6,700 fixed reserved seats, a stage-front floor configurable for roughly 1,700 seated or 2,300 standing, and a sloping general-admission lawn behind. Pollstar named it Best New Major Concert Venue in 2013, and the American Institute of Steel Construction honoured its engineering in 2015. The booking history reads like a festival poster: Foo Fighters, Kendrick Lamar, Janet Jackson, Kanye West, Willie Nelson, Kiss, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Green Day and Drake have all played the bowl, while Grand Prix weekends bolt world-class headliners onto race tickets - the temporary Super Stage handles the largest F1 crowds. Live Nation operates the venue's concert calendar. Practicalities: the circuit sits about 25 minutes southeast of downtown Austin off Texas 130, with parking spread across the COTA lots and an RV park for overnighters; lawn patrons should bring blankets, and summer shows reward sunset arrival. Few venues anywhere pair music with a view of a racetrack's signature Turn 1 hill.
