The brewery took its name from Memphis's basketball identity - the Grit and Grind Grizzlies - and built its taproom in the Uptown district with a skyline view to match. Grind City Brewing Company, at 76 Waterworks Avenue just north of downtown Memphis, opened in 2021 and has grown into one of the city's flagship craft breweries and outdoor music spots. The operation fills a renovated industrial site: a production brewery turning out flagship lagers, IPAs, fruited sours and seasonal runs; a spacious taproom pouring the full range; and a sprawling lawn and patio complex where downtown's towers frame the stage. Food trucks rotate through most operating days, and the grounds welcome dogs and families. Live music became the second identity: the outdoor Grind City Amp stage books regional and national acts through the warm months - country, rock, hip-hop and Memphis soul - and the lawn format scales from a few hundred taproom regulars to festival-sized crowds for headline shows and watch parties. The location is part of the play: Uptown sits between the Pinch District and the Wolf River Harbor, minutes from St. Jude's campus, and the brewery has anchored the area's revival alongside new development spreading north from the Pyramid. Grizzlies and Tigers game days fill the taps, and the brewery's cans have spread across Tennessee retail. Practical notes: the site has ample on-site parking, is a five-minute drive from Beale Street, and hours run Wednesday through Sunday with the calendar - shows, trivia, run clubs and markets - posted weekly. The skyline sunset from the lawn costs nothing with a pint. The brewery arrived as Memphis's craft scene hit its stride, joining Wiseacre, Crosstown and Memphis Made in a city that had been slow to the craft boom and then embraced it; Grind City's taproom quickly became one of the scene's largest gathering spaces, and its distribution now reaches across the Mid-South. The Amp's bookings have grown in step, stepping up from local showcases to touring names as the lawn's reputation spread.
