When the University of Denver's basketball teams outgrew the atmosphere of their 7,000-seat arena, they moved into the smaller gym next door - on purpose. Hamilton Gymnasium, inside the Ritchie Center for Sports and Wellness at 2240 East Buchtel Boulevard on the DU campus, is the roughly 2,000-seat home of Pioneers volleyball and both basketball programs, prized precisely for the noise a compact room generates. The gym is part of the Ritchie Center, the gold-spired athletics cathedral completed in 1999 that also houses Magness Arena, the Coors Fitness Center and DU's Olympic-calibre ice and aquatics facilities. Hamilton connects to Magness through a shared lobby, and its retractable seating rolls back to expose three full-size courts for daily student recreation - a genuine dual-purpose space in a way few Division I venues are. Volleyball built the room's reputation: Denver's program stacked Summit League championships through the 2010s and 2020s with Hamilton as its home floor, and gymnastics called the gym home until 2019, when the program's growing crowds - top-ten nationally in attendance - pushed its meets into Magness Arena. Basketball made the reverse journey in 2021, trading Magness's scale for Hamilton's intimacy, with chairback seating for season-ticket holders and students on top of the action. The venue works beyond varsity sport: banquets, lectures, trade shows, youth tournaments, cheer showcases and campus ceremonies rotate through, and an upgrade replacing the bleacher system with individual chairback seating is being fitted ahead of the 2026-27 season. Getting there is simple: the University of Denver light-rail station on the E and H lines sits directly across Buchtel Boulevard, with event parking in the Ritchie Center garages. The gold dome of the Ritchie Center's carillon tower makes the complex the easiest landmark on campus to find.
