The entire main floor rides on a Gala lift system: overnight, 600 theatre seats sink away and the room becomes a flat-floor hall for 2,100 - one of the most flexible major venues in America. The H-E-B Performance Hall is the centrepiece of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts at 100 Auditorium Circle on San Antonio's River Walk, opened on 4 September 2014 behind the preserved 1926 facade of the old Municipal Auditorium. The site's history runs deep: the Spanish Mission-style Municipal Auditorium opened in 1926 seating nearly 5,000, survived a catastrophic 1979 fire, and hosted everything from operas to presidential visits before falling into underuse. Bexar County voters approved 100 million dollars in bonds in 2008, and the 203-million-dollar transformation by LMN Architects and Marmon Mok kept the beloved facade while building an entirely new hall behind it, wrapped in a metallic LED-lit veil. In its theatrical configuration the hall seats 1,738 across orchestra, grand-tier boxes, mezzanine and balcony, with acoustics by Fisher Dachs and Akustiks tunable from unamplified symphony to full rock production. It serves as home stage for Opera San Antonio, Ballet San Antonio and the San Antonio Philharmonic, while touring Broadway, major comedians and headline concerts fill the rest of a calendar exceeding 200 events a year. The flat-floor trick is what sets the building apart commercially: cabaret nights, galas, banquets and general-admission rock shows all use the same room, and the sound insulation lets the adjacent 250-seat Alvarez Studio Theater and the 600-capacity River Walk Plaza - an outdoor stage with a 32-foot video wall facing the river - run simultaneously. Logistics: the Tobin sits on a quiet bend of the River Walk north of the tourist core, ten minutes' walk from the Alamo, with garages on Auditorium Circle and river taxis at the door. The LED veil after dark is worth the walk on its own.
