Every August the biggest names in country, rock and hip-hop play a stage set against a one-mile dirt oval called the Track of Champions. The Hoosier Lottery Grandstand, on the Indiana State Fairgrounds at 1202 East 38th Street in Indianapolis, is the fair's big-event venue: a covered grandstand seating 13,921, rising to roughly 15,500 with track-level seating. The grandstand's bones are fair-history deep: the fairgrounds moved to 38th Street in 1892, and the grandstand-and-track complex has hosted more than a century of harness racing - the Track of Champions remains one of American harness racing's storied miles - plus auto racing that once counted the Hulman Hundred and USAC Silver Crown classics among its dates. Music history happened here too: the Beatles played the fairgrounds during their 1964 tour, and generations of State Fair concert series have put everyone from country royalty to arena rock acts in front of the grandstand - the permanent 48-by-80-foot stage, with four dressing rooms beneath, purpose-built for the annual run of headline shows. The facility works year-round beyond the fair: motorsports, cheer and dance championships, monster trucks and spectator events use the covered pavilion, backed by permanent concessions, a dedicated box office and event offices - one venue among the fairgrounds' vast complex of halls and pavilions that host events every month. Practical notes: the fairgrounds sit at 38th Street and Fall Creek Parkway with thousands of on-site parking spaces; during the Indiana State Fair each August, grandstand concerts are ticketed separately from gate admission, and the fair's 800,000-plus annual visitors make advance purchase essential for headline nights. The fairgrounds around it amplify the venue's reach: the 250-acre campus hosts events year-round - from the Hoosier Lottery Stage amphitheatre, freshly expanded into a 5,000-to-7,500-capacity concert facility under promoter MOKB Presents, to livestock pavilions and the Indiana Farmers Coliseum - making the Grandstand one node in the busiest event complex in the state. During fair season the grandstand's concert run has historically packed decades of headliners onto the trackside stage, a tradition stretching back through the fair's 170-year history.
