Atlanta's big summer shed has answered to six different names - but three decades of lawn crowds have only ever called it Lakewood. The Lakewood Amphitheatre, at 2002 Lakewood Avenue SE on the old Lakewood Fairgrounds south of downtown, opened in July 1989 as a purpose-built 18,920-capacity outdoor music venue - 7,000 covered pavilion seats and a 12,000-person lawn. The venue arrived with the amphitheatre boom: a 10-million-dollar build by concert promoter PACE on 75 acres of the beloved former fairgrounds, designed specifically for popular music with a proscenium-scale stage, big-format sound and sloped-lawn sightlines. The City of Atlanta owns the property; Live Nation operates it as the market's standard summer shed. The naming saga is its own Atlanta story: Coca-Cola Lakewood Amphitheatre from opening through 1998, HiFi Buys Amphitheatre from 2001, Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood from 2009, Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood from 2018 through 2021 - with returns to plain Lakewood Amphitheatre in the gaps and again since the last deal lapsed, which is how the locals navigated the whole time anyway. The stage history covers every amphitheatre-era genre: three decades of classic rock, country, hip-hop and R&B package tours have rolled through - the venue's southside location and huge lawn made it a natural home for Atlanta's hip-hop and urban-radio festival bills as much as the touring rock circuit - and the pavilion roof keeps half the house dry through Georgia's summer thunderstorms. The compound is built for the long haul: multiple concession runs, merch stands, on-site medical, metal-detector entry and bollard-lit walkways handle crowds pushing 19,000, while the lawn's natural elevation gives even the cheapest blanket spot a full view of the stage. Practical notes: the site sits off I-75/85 at the Lakewood Freeway with event parking on the old fairgrounds acreage - pre-purchased parking and early arrival beat the two-lane crawl; the Lakewood/Fort McPherson MARTA station is a rideshare-length hop away, lawn chairs and blankets follow per-event rules, and clear-bag policies apply.
