Seventy-five people is a sold-out night - and half of Denver's favourite bands have played to exactly that. Lost Lake Lounge, at 3602 East Colfax Avenue, is the city's definitive dive-bar venue: a cabin-styled room on the old Colfax strip where touring indie acts and local heroes play close enough to touch. The address has been pouring since mid-century: the space cycled through lives as Mr. Von's Alamo, the Monroe Tavern and the long-running Bulldog Bar - its layout unchanged since the 1940s - before Hi-Dive founder Matt LaBarge took it over in March 2010, painting, de-cluttering and modelling the wood-panelled result on the throwback lounges of LA's Silver Lake. The 2013 sale built the ecosystem: Scott Campbell - Larimer Lounge owner and AEG Presents talent buyer - bought the room, overhauled the stage and sound system, and slotted Lost Lake into Denver's indie farm system: bands too small for the Larimer start here, and the Bluebird Theater two blocks west waits above both, making East Colfax a graduated venue corridor. The reputation outgrew the room: Westword named it Denver's best rock club in 2018, and the booking - handled by the same connected buyers as Campbell's Larimer Lounge and Globe Hall - routinely lands acclaimed touring artists playing deliberately tiny warm-ups alongside the local scene's album releases and residencies. The charm is the preserved dive: corny framed pictures and neon over the bathroom doors, cheap beer beside a proper cocktail list, a high-ceilinged brick bar room attached to the venue side, and a patio built for Colfax people-watching - the grandpa's-basement-circa-1985 atmosphere maintained as deliberate policy through every upgrade. Practical notes: shows run nearly nightly and are 21-plus; the 15 and 20 buses run Colfax around the clock and street parking is tight, capacity means anything hyped sells out instantly - buy ahead - and the stage-right corner by the sound booth is the only spot with breathing room on a full night.
