Albert Kahn built it to stamp car bodies; Detroit's artists inherited the daylight. The Russell Industrial Center at 1600 Clay Street is a seven-building, 2.2-million-square-foot complex at Milwaukee Junction - the crossing of the two railroads around which Detroit's original auto industry clustered - designed in 1915 for the J.W. Murray Manufacturing Company. Kahn's signature reinforced-concrete construction gave Murray fireproof floors, open spans without obstructive columns and walls of steel-framed factory glass; the body maker supplied Ford, Dodge, Chrysler and Graham as the third-largest auto-body company in America before leaving the industry in 1955. Printing and light manufacturing carried the complex through the late twentieth century until developer Dennis Kefallinos bought all seven buildings in 2003 and began converting the floors into studios and workshops from 1,000 to 7,000 square feet. The result became one of the largest artist colonies in the city - painters, glassmakers, photographers, woodworkers and small manufacturers filling the concrete floors - with the annual People's Art Festival opening the courtyards and studios to the public with stages of local music. The complex's scale makes it a natural event site between festivals: corporate launches - Chevrolet unveiled the 2014 Corvette here - weekend bazaars, film shoots and exhibitions rotate through spaces no modern building could afford to replicate. The story stays contested - a 2017 code shutdown, rent disputes and deferred maintenance recur in tenant accounts - but the building endures the way Kahn intended: nearly indestructible, drenched in north light, and cheaper per square foot than anywhere else an artist can weld indoors. Of the 2.2 million square feet, roughly a third is in active use at any given time - a vacancy cushion that lets events claim entire floors on short notice, something no purpose-built venue in the city can offer.
