The bar with Vancouver's best tagline - "Don't be a dick" - holds down the corner where Mount Pleasant meets Strathcona. The American at 926 Main Street opened in 2016 in the voluminous room that spent 2011 to 2015 as the live venue The Electric Owl, revived after a year dormant by Ezra Kish, Patryk Drozd and Simon Fallick, the team behind the Cobalt across the street. The concept is a full-service neighborhood public house wearing several hats at once: lively bar, arcade, live music venue and event space, locally and independently owned since day one. The game room is a genuine draw - the Lower Mainland's best selection of new pinball machines lined up alongside a pool table and a wall of arcade cabinets - while the taps favor local craft beer, the cocktails skew unpretentious, and a takeaway craft beer and natural wine store trades at the front entrance. The music calendar mixes punk, indie and rock bookings - Ceremony, Chuck Ragan and the Young Fresh Fellows have all played the room - with DJ nights spinning R&B, hip-hop, disco and self-aware theme parties celebrating everything from butt rock to Dirty South classics. The kitchen earns its own following: the burgers descend from the Cobalt's celebrated Dirty Burger, and a late-night happy hour keeps the room honest with cheap beers and highballs after the show. Groups up to 250 can book the space without the venue-hire fees typical elsewhere, and the room's mix of games, music and comfort food has made it the reliable everything-bar of the Main Street corridor - a public house in the old sense, updated with pinball. The room's scale - deep, high-ceilinged and flexible - lets it swing from quiet weekday pinball sessions to packed weekend shows without changing character, and its position across from the Cobalt gives the Main-at-Prior corner two stages run by the same team, a small independent circuit in miniature.
