The team that built Chicago's festival-scale rooms decided the city was missing a small one, so they tore down a nightclub and started over. Outset at 1675 North Elston Avenue opened in July 2024, a 750-capacity, 10,000-square-foot venue built by Auris Presents - the promoters behind Concord Music Hall, Radius and ARC Music Festival - on the site of the former Konkrete club near Lincoln Yards. The concept dates to late 2020, when the Auris principals - Nick Karounos, Stuart Hackley and John Curley - identified the sub-1,000-capacity tier as the gap in Chicago's venue stock and spent a reported two million dollars building a room to fill it. The design pitch is big-room production at club scale: state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting, sightlines from a wrap-around balcony above the main floor, and the finish level of venues three times the size. A matching 10,000-square-foot outdoor space runs alongside, hosting rotating food trucks, bars, artist merchandise and community events before and during shows. The opening had a Chicago-style prologue - inaugural George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic shows relocated while city inspections dragged through June 2024 - before the room came online that July. The neighborhood is now a corridor of consequence: the Hideout sits around the corner and the Salt Shed complex a few blocks south on Elston, making the strip along the river Chicago's newest venue district. The name states the mission - a starting point where developing acts play their first proper production - and the room gives the Auris ladder its bottom rung, one block of Elston at a time. The Auris portfolio gives the room a built-in pipeline: acts developed at Outset can step up to the 1,400-capacity Concord Music Hall, the 3,500-capacity Radius and the ARC festival main stages without leaving the promoter's ecosystem - the same laddering logic that major operators run nationally, executed here by an independent Chicago company.
