Upstairs from one of Sacramento's defining venues is the room where the city goes to hear what is coming next. The Starlet Room occupies the second floor of 2708 J Street in Midtown, directly above Harlow's, the restaurant-nightclub-venue that has anchored the J Street entertainment strip for decades. The space spent years as MOMO Sacramento - a lounge and side stage under the same ownership - before being rebranded as The Starlet Room, with new sound and lighting systems installed, the bar reworked toward local taps, and the calendar opened to both all-ages shows and 21-plus nights. The capacity is about 200, roughly half the size of the downstairs room, which is precisely the function: Harlow's catches the established touring acts while the Starlet Room runs the underground - emerging indie, jazz, soul, hip-hop and experimental bookings a rung before they graduate downstairs. The room is fully equipped rather than improvised - a proper stage, dance floor and full bar - and doubles as one of Midtown's favored private-event spaces for parties from 65 to 200. The one caveat is access: the room is reached by a flight of stairs, and accessibility for guests with mobility needs is limited - the operators advise contacting the venue ahead of a visit. The J Street address matters: Midtown Sacramento is the city's nightlife spine, and the stacked two-venue format lets a single corner serve both a headline show and a discovery night simultaneously. For Sacramento musicians the geography is aspirational in miniature - play the Starlet Room, pack it, and the bigger stage is literally one floor down. The rebrand from MOMO also marked a programming shift: where the old lounge leaned on DJ nights and private hires, the Starlet Room runs a proper concert calendar under the Harlow's booking operation, and its all-ages capability fills a real gap in a Midtown strip whose venues are otherwise overwhelmingly 21-plus after dark.
