Boom Chicago has been making Amsterdam laugh in English since 1993, when two friends from the suburbs of Chicago arrived with what they cheerfully call the best stoner idea ever and, ignoring advice from the city tourist board that the venture would surely fail, set about staging improvised and sketch comedy for the capital large international audience. From a tiny first venue near the Leidseplein the company grew steadily, moving through ever larger theatres before settling in 2013 into the Rozentheater on the Rozengracht, a striking building that first opened as a cinema in 1913 and once ranked among the biggest picture houses in the country. The Rozengracht complex now holds three theatres with a combined capacity of around five hundred seats, along with a multi-level cafe and bar set beneath the original stained-glass windows, and serves as a creative hub as much as a performance space. What makes Boom Chicago more than a local curiosity is its astonishing record as a launch pad for comic talent, for its stages have been graced over the years by performers who went on to become major figures in American film and television, including Seth Meyers, Jordan Peele and several of the creators and stars of the hit series Ted Lasso. The shows blend scripted satire with fast, audience-driven improvisation, often skewering Dutch quirks and current events for the benefit of visitors and expatriates alike, and no two performances are ever quite the same. Alongside the public programme the company runs a business arm that has offered corporate training and presentation coaching since its earliest days, and an academy that teaches the craft of improvisation to newcomers. For travellers seeking an evening of entertainment that needs no command of Dutch, Boom Chicago offers a reliably sharp and energetic night out, and the chance, just possibly, to watch a future comedy star learning the ropes long before the rest of the world catches on.
