A travelling exhibition of giant inflatable art set up inside a film studio on the city's Northwest Side, the Balloon Museum's EmotionAir show opened in Chicago in late October 2025 for a run scheduled through early April 2026. The wider Balloon Museum project began in 2021 and has toured cities including London, Paris, Rome, New York and Singapore; this edition, first staged in London in late 2023, frames its inflatable works around the theme of emotion. Rather than a permanent collection, the show fills a series of large rooms at The Fields Studios with more than a dozen oversized, often interactive installations by artists from around the world, layered with sound, light and fog. Visitors are encouraged to touch and move through many of the pieces, and several rooms are built for play as much as for looking, which makes it popular with families and with people hunting for striking photographs. The scale is much of the point: works swell to room-filling size in shapes that deliberately upend everyday objects. Because it is a temporary, ticketed pop-up rather than a museum in the usual sense, hours and the exact line-up shift over the run, and timed entry is standard. There is no public phone line; the organisers handle questions by email. It sits a little outside the usual downtown tourist circuit, in the Hermosa area, with paid parking on site and transit nearby. Reactions tend to split between those who enjoy the playful, sensory spectacle and those who find it light on substance, but for a rainy afternoon or a family outing it offers something distinct from the city's traditional galleries and museums. Each room is the work of a different international artist or studio, so the tone shifts from playful to eerie as visitors pass between them, and staff performers sometimes animate the spaces. The format has spread quickly through major cities as part of a wider boom in touch-and-photograph art experiences, and the organisers lean on that shareability in their marketing. Because the Chicago run is finite, anyone hoping to see it needs to catch it before the booking window closes in spring.
