The Athens branch of the international Hard Rock Cafe chain occupies a converted historic building on Adrianou Street in the Monastiraki district of central Athens, immediately below the northern slope of the Acropolis. The Athens venue opened in 2004 and is one of the principal international locations of the famous American themed restaurant chain founded in London in 1971. The Hard Rock Cafe chain was founded by the American entrepreneurs Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton, who opened the first venue on Old Park Lane in London on 14 June 1971. The chain expanded rapidly through the 1980s and 1990s and now operates more than two hundred venues worldwide, with locations in most major international tourist destinations. The Athens branch is one of the principal locations in south-eastern Europe and serves as the operational hub for the wider regional network. The restaurant occupies a converted nineteenth-century neoclassical building on Adrianou, a pedestrianised commercial street running along the line of the ancient Roman road through the centre of the modern Monastiraki district. The historic facade has been carefully preserved on the exterior, with the conversion to a Hard Rock Cafe largely confined to the interior, allowing the building to fit visually with the surrounding nineteenth-century commercial architecture of the district. The principal interior is decorated in the standard Hard Rock Cafe style with a substantial collection of original musical memorabilia covering the floors and walls. The Athens collection focuses particularly on Greek and Mediterranean musical history alongside the standard international rock and roll memorabilia, with original guitars, costumes and personal items from Greek artists including Demis Roussos, Vangelis, Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis alongside the international standards. The menu follows the standard Hard Rock Cafe American comfort food repertoire of burgers, ribs, steaks, salads and large cocktails, supplemented by a small selection of locally adapted dishes that incorporate Greek ingredients and seasonings. The restaurant operates daily from midday through to late evening and is one of the principal international chain restaurants in central Athens, popular with both Greek nationals and the wider international tourist trade for the standardised experience and the central location at the foot of the Acropolis.
