The principal vertical landmark of the ASIATIQUE The Riverfront complex on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River in southern Bangkok, ASIATIQUE SKY is a sixty-metre-tall observation Ferris wheel that provides one of the principal panoramic viewing experiences over the southern Bangkok cityscape. The wheel was opened in December 2012 as one of the original anchor attractions of the wider ASIATIQUE riverfront night market and shopping complex. The wheel was originally installed under the brand name Asiatique Sky and was the largest single Ferris wheel anywhere in Thailand at the time of opening. The original wheel was supplied by the Italian amusement ride specialist Fabbri and contains forty-two enclosed climate-controlled passenger gondolas, each accommodating up to six passengers. The full rotation takes around fifteen minutes and provides a continuous changing view of the Chao Phraya River, the southern Bangkok skyline, the riverside Wat Yannawa temple and the distant central business district. The wheel was substantially renovated in 2018 with the replacement of the original lighting system, the upgrading of the gondola interiors and the addition of the current night-time LED illumination programme. The renovation also introduced the current six-stop boarding system that allows passengers to remain in the gondolas for two full rotations rather than disembarking immediately after the first rotation, providing approximately thirty minutes of continuous viewing for the standard ticket price. The principal viewing experience covers a wide arc of the southern Bangkok cityscape. The Chao Phraya River itself is the principal foreground feature, with continuous boat traffic visible from the upper gondolas during the evening operating hours. The middle distance includes the substantial new high-rise developments along the western Thonburi bank of the river, with several recently completed luxury apartment towers visible against the eastern horizon. The far distance includes the central business district of Sukhumvit Road and the principal landmark towers of the central city. The wheel operates as one of the principal individual ticketed attractions within the wider ASIATIQUE complex, with standard tickets available at the central ticket desk near the principal pier entrance. The operating hours run from late afternoon at around seventeen hundred through to the closing time of the wider complex at around midnight every day of the week. The wheel is particularly popular during the evening hours when the night-time LED illumination of the wheel itself combines with the various lighting effects of the surrounding wider riverfront for an extended photographic opportunity.
