Opened in April 2012 on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River in the Bang Kho Laem district of southern Bangkok, ASIATIQUE The Riverfront is one of the largest open-air shopping and entertainment complexes in Thailand and combines a traditional Thai night market with substantial dining, entertainment and retail components. The complex occupies the converted former waterfront site of the East Asiatic Company, a major Danish trading firm whose Bangkok warehouses had occupied the site continuously from 1897 through to the closure of the firm in 1947. The development was carried out by TCC Land Asset World between 2010 and 2012, with a total investment of around two and a half billion Thai baht. The principal design challenge of the project was to combine the conventional retail and dining functions of a modern entertainment mall with the cultural atmosphere of a traditional Thai night market in a single integrated complex. The solution was a series of four themed districts arranged around the converted historic warehouse buildings of the former trading firm. The Town Square district at the eastern end of the complex contains the principal collection of the older historic warehouse buildings, with the original brick walls, the wooden roof beams and the small forecourt of the East Asiatic Company carefully preserved as a small interpretive museum of the early Bangkok international trade. The Factory District in the north-western corner contains a substantial cluster of more modern retail outlets focused on Thai designer fashion, leather goods and contemporary jewellery. The Waterfront District along the river frontage contains the principal dining and entertainment establishments of the complex, with around thirty restaurants and bars offering a wide selection of Thai and international cuisine. The principal seating areas all face the river, with continuous views of the boat traffic on the Chao Phraya during the evening operating hours. The famous Calypso Cabaret, the Bangkok Golden Dome and several other theatrical venues are located within this district. The Chareonkrung District at the western edge of the site contains the larger covered market area, with approximately one thousand five hundred small market stalls selling Thai souvenirs, handicrafts, traditional clothing, street food and the various standard tourist purchases. The complex operates daily from late afternoon through to midnight, with a free shuttle boat service running every fifteen minutes from the central Saphan Taksin pier near the BTS Skytrain Saphan Taksin station. The principal landmark sixty-metre observation Ferris wheel at the western edge of the complex is visible across most of the southern Bangkok district.
