Hard Rock Cafe Porto opened in 2019 on Rua do Almada in the Aliados district of central Porto, taking over a corner building roughly halfway between Avenida dos Aliados and the Bolhao Market. It is the second Hard Rock outlet in Portugal after the Lisbon location on Avenida da Liberdade, and the first in the northern Portuguese region, slotting into a chain that operates around 250 restaurants in 70 countries since the original London opening in 1971. The Porto restaurant covers approximately 850 square metres across two floors with seating for around 220 diners, a stage for live music sets, a Rock Shop selling the chain merchandise and a small lounge bar at the rear. The menu follows the standard Hard Rock format of American style burgers, ribs and grilled chicken alongside a smaller selection of Mediterranean and regional Portuguese dishes built around bacalhau and local sausages. A signature cocktail list and a roster of around 30 craft beers, half of them Portuguese, fill out the bar side of the operation. The memorabilia collection on the walls is a defining element of any Hard Rock branch and the Porto location pulls heavily from the local musical heritage, with items from Portuguese rock acts including GNR, Xutos and Pedro Abrunhosa alongside international pieces from the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Queen and Bob Marley. Live music sets run two or three nights a week, typically Portuguese cover bands working through the rock standards catalogue. The location stays open until 02:00 on weekend nights and serves a continuous menu from 12:00 through the rest of the day. The wider Aliados area surrounding the Hard Rock has been the principal commercial and civic centre of modern Porto since the early twentieth century, anchored by the Camara Municipal city hall at the top of the Avenida dos Aliados slope and the Sao Bento railway station two blocks south. Major Porto landmarks within walking distance of the Hard Rock include the Clerigos Tower a short walk west, the Lello bookshop further along Rua das Carmelitas, the Trindade Metro hub directly behind the city hall and the Bolhao Market two blocks east. The Rua do Almada itself is one of the original retail arteries of the modern downtown and has been undergoing a steady process of renovation since the late 2010s, with most of the upper-floor apartments along the street converted into short-stay tourist accommodation across the past decade.
